Israel’s Channel 12 has reported a concerning development at the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing, where 132 aid trucks are stranded, unable to enter the Gaza Strip due to an Israeli protest involving several hundred individuals. This blockade has resulted in dire consequences, with 2.4 million Palestinians facing starvation, exacerbating the already devastating impact on their homes and livelihoods.
The Israeli protestors argue that they are advocating for the release of captives before permitting further humanitarian aid into Gaza. Though it is unclear if they realize that by not permitting food and medicine into Gaza, the hostages will also starve. Their actions have included multiple protests with consistent demands in recent weeks, culminating in the announcement of a multi-day march. Most recently a dance party was held with DJs on site to block the trucks from entering Gaza. IDF soldiers have been stationed near the blockade and have refused to remove the protestors or to help end the blockade.
This callous and inhumane blockade has sparked widespread international condemnation, as the protestors unlawfully obstruct essential humanitarian aid and resources crucial for the survival of innocent Palestinian civilians, including children, women, and men.
According to the internationally recognized 5-phase scale for classifying food crises, over half a million individuals in Gaza, representing a quarter of the entire population, are now classified in the most severe Phase 5, denoted as ‘catastrophic.’ This classification signifies an imminent risk of widespread starvation and loss of life, with over 80% of individuals in Phase 5 globally residing in Gaza.
UN rapporteurs warn that the likelihood of famine is high unless a ceasefire is implemented, and Israel allows increased access to aid and commercial goods in the region. Furthermore, withholding food and humanitarian assistance from civilians constitutes a clear violation of international law.
The primary interim ruling from the International Court of Justice concerning Israel underscores the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid. Despite this, the protesting group is now preparing to march to Jerusalem, further escalating tensions.
